Coriolanus Overture, Op. 62
Inspired by Collin’s Coriolanus, based on Plutarch’s work, Beethoven decided to
write an overture.
The overture begins in a solemn statement. But, his agitation, his angry protest
is interrupted by a soft and smooth theme, structuring a traditional Sonata
Form. This theme is often regarded as representing the imploration of
Coriolanus’ wife.
Romance in F for Violin and Orchestra
Written in 1798, the music has a rondo theme with a soft wavy melody, whose
romantic and lyric sentiment is like an expectation for the future.
Then the music goes into the first episode, a warm and sincere theme, whose
tonic and bass echo each other.
In the coda, the solo violin pours out a soft and delicate emotion, with a
modulation in the bass tones. Gradually, the music becomes weaker and weaker
until it ends in a distant echo.
Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
Four songs cycle for Mezzo-soprano and orchestra with music and lyrics by Mahler
written in 1883. When the composer was young, he fell in love with a young girl
in Kassel. Part of the music here is also used in his Symphony Nº 1.
