A production of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and Opera Australia
Victor Hugo penned this story during the twilight
of many European monarchies, and Francesco Maria Piave centred it on the court
jester Rigoletto, infusing the libretto with passion, conspiracy and vengeance.
Verdi brought the music to great heights in such famous arias as "Caro nome" and
"La donna è mobile", sung by the Duke of Mantua to seduce another woman while a
heart-broken Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter, listens in. The enraged father
conspires to assassinate the Duke, but in a cruel twist of fate he is delivered
the dead body of his daughter instead.
Rising stars will shine in this production from
Opera Australia and the Cultural Affairs Bureau, with the Prague Chamber Choir
and the Macao Orchestra making grand débuts under the baton of Jari Hämäläinen,
newly appointed artistic director of the famed Savonlinna Opera Festival, in Finland.
