Wayang kulit is Indonesian for puppet
theatre and points to the art’s origins on the islands of Bali and Java. One of
the most important art forms from the archipelago nation, UNESCO declared it
part of the intangible oral heritage of humanity in 2003.
The word wayang means theatre, while
kulit is skin, referring to one of the special materials used to create the
puppets – leather. Truly precious works of art in their own right, taking weeks
to build by hand, these puppets come to Macao for an authentic début of this
ancient art.
