This new Yue Opera is the first in the history of
Chinese theatre to break with the traditional theme of “beauty paired with wit,”
and the first time that the breadth and depth of the practice of book collecting
in China has been described through theatre and song. The story is set in Tianyi,
Ningbo, home of the oldest private library in China that has survived the tests
of time. It unwinds the complex story of a family who collected books and the
vicissitudes that their library endured through an era plagued by internal
rebellions and foreign invasions, while never losing sight of the strong beliefs
and personalities of generations of Chinese scholars. Young first-class artist
Mao Weitao plays the lead in this innovative opera.
