This new version of the Kun Opera The Peony Pavilion, especially dedicated to youth, features artists from both sides of the Taiwan Straits in a production directed by renowned Chinese playwright Bai Xianyong. The opera maintains the original essence of the original play, which eulogizes, love, freedom and the purity of youth. Performances of this production in Taipei, Hong Kong, Suzhou and Shanghai were highly acclaimed by both critics and the public.

The Peony Pavilion is the masterpiece of Ming dynasty playwright Tang Xianzu. Premiered over 400 years ago, it is considered a brilliant work in which drama and literature are ingeniously combined.

Kun Opera – World Cultural Heritage
Kun opera (Kunqu) is the oldest form of Chinese folk opera, and has been honoured by UNESCO as a masterpiece of world oral and intangible heritage. The highly refined style of presentation in Kun opera distinguishes it from the more familiar genres of Beijing and Cantonese opera.
