Musical Director and Chief Conductor of the
Bolshoi Theatre, Maestro Alexander Vedernikov leads the audience on a classical
voyage to the world of three of Russia's greatest composers. A palette of
colourful rhythms introduces this orchestra, who set the programme in motion
with Mikhail Glinka, the father of Russian nationalism in music. The strings
swagger to a sarcastic Sergei Prokofiev, then Piotr I. Tchaikovsky bids adieu
with his Fifth Symphony. This work, long laboured over, is punctuated with
typical Russian fatalism and soothed by the first use of a waltz in symphonic
history.
