Alegria Cinema is honoured to host a group of master performers who specialize in one of Zhejiang Province's major operatic genres, Wu opera, an art form named for its home city of Jinhua, historically called Wuzhou.
From this varied repertoire comes a retelling of the renowned Legend of the White Snake, a popular theme in various genres of art and literature. This mythical tale, reflecting young people's longing for freedom to love under the yoke of feudalism, tells of Bai Suzhen, a white snake who, after centuries of ceaseless meditation, has acquired transcendent powers and taken the form of a beautiful human woman. Immortal and powerful, she longs to experience one thing more – human love.
Featuring lively and colourful performances evoking wondrous Chinese mythological imagery, this presentation will most certainly be a feast for the eyes.
