The
Woman from Huizhou, a new Huangmei opera, incorporates several new and
innovative elements. Unpredictable stagecraft and innovative directing combine
with Han Zaifen’s remarkably true-to-life performance and a score that is almost
symphonic to make The Woman from Huizhou the antithesis of traditional
Huangmei opera. Light, happy themes are replaced with depth, dignity and
soul-stirring, thought-provoking ideas. The result is a powerful artistic punch.
At the same time, the opera depicts the romantic charm of the culture of Huizhou.
The end result is a brave new world for Huangmei opera.
The Woman from Huizhou has gained renown throughout China
and has been performed almost one hundred times. Excellent reviews continue to
flood in.
