With a unique success story, the Akademie für Alte Musik (Akamus), founded in 1982, is recognised as one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. Besides having offered its own regular concert series in Berlin since 1984 at the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, it has been a regular guest at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden and at the Innsbrucker Festwochen für Alte Musik in Austria. The orchestra has worked closely with such prominent musical directors as René Jacobs, Marcus Creed and Daniel Reuss, with leading choirs including the RIAS Kammerchor and the Vocal Consort Berlin, and with countertenor Andreas Scholl, soprano Cecilia Bartoli and choreographer Sasha Waltz.
Akamus also forged new paths with a critically acclaimed and celebrated production of Medea in 2007 and its own choreographed concert production 4 Elements – 4 Seasons, further establishing itself as a creative and innovative ensemble. Akamus has received numerous awards, among them the Grammy Award, the Diapason d’Or, the Cannes Classical Award, the Gramophone Award, the Edison Award and the Telemann Prize.
