The vocal ensemble Introitus was formed 10 years ago by vocalists from various backgrounds and groups, among them the Choir of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. The Ensemble set out to interpret musical pieces ranging from Gregorian Chant to works from the 21st century, with a special emphasis on music from the 12th to 16th centuries and works by Portuguese authors.
Under the artistic direction of Filipe Faria and Sergio Péixoto, Sete Lágrimas is one of Europe’s most innovative consorts. Specialising in ancient and contemporary music, the group seeks out a dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary and explores the blurred frontier between art music and the popular traditions.
The dialogue, competition, conflict and fusion of religious and secular music eventually led to a merging of these genres. Examples of this style are the anthems of medieval Christians, the French motets of the 13th century, the Italian folk songs of the 13th to 15th centuries, songs of praise, traditional melodies such as lullabies and the adaptation of secular polyphony to sacred themes in the so called “spiritual songs” of the Renaissance. This concert is a visit to this crossroads in our history with choral pieces that are common, yet sometimes criticised. One thing is for sure, they contribute to life as we know it today and are, in their beauty, an insight into the vast musical panorama of the Mediterranean region.
