Inspired by The Book of Han: Biographies of Li Guang and Su Jian, this new version of the Beijing opera Su Wu of the Han Dynasty uses the artistic experience of the traditional Beijing opera Su Wu, the Shepherd to eulogise the Han Dynasty patriot Su Wu, praised for “not obsessing over wealth and not surrendering to force.”
An homage to a thousand-year-old historical incident, the opera Su Wu, the Shepherd has moved the hearts of many with its tale of nobility, integrity and dignity. The story of Su Wu surfaces in several works from the Beijing Opera repertoire. In this version – directed by playwright Gao Mukun and featuring celebrated Xi School performer Zhang Jianguo as lead actor – Su Wu of the Han Dynasty re-interprets the old story, giving it new life and a novel perspective. An auspicious season-opening performance for the 23rd Macao Arts Festival, this opera is destined to impress with its heroic momentum and rich content!
