A well-loved and widely-appreciated art form in Macao, Cantonese Opera and its music are among the most significant intangible cultural heritage items of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao, and they represent an important genre within the realm of Chinese opera as a whole. In an effort to make the presence of this precious performing art more strongly felt in art circles and by the general public, the Macao Arts Festival has been devoted to disseminating and promoting traditional Cantonese opera, introducing this art and its music to ever broader audiences.
The survival of this operatic art form and the continued inheritance of its performative skills by successive generations owe much to the hard work and support of those active in Cantonese Opera circles. Today the art is flourishing, and the Macao General Association of Cantonese Opera and Music has played an important role in reaching that benchmark. Since the Association’s establishment, it has made substantial contributions to the promotion of Cantonese Opera culture and music. For this year’s Festival, the Association’s renowned Cantonese Opera actors and actresses have once again been invited to perform several classics of the repertoire, excerpted or in their entirety. This will surely be one of the Festival’s major local highlights.
