Relating to the original sound of Cool Jazz in the 1960s, the musicians of pure desmond founded the group in the year 2002 to dignify the music of the Paul Desmond Quartet (with Jim Hall, Gene Cherico and Connie Kay) and to carry it over into the 21st century by programming it together with the group’s own original compositions and adaptations of songs of our time. “Less is more” is their motto, and that means focusing on the melodies.

Coming from different backgrounds, the four musicians display a great talent for interaction, creating an imaginative dynamic that comes to the fore in every performance. What makes pure desmond is the diversity of protagonists involved – influenced by punk, new music, hard rock, soul, R&B – in changing old jazz and classical music.

When Lights Are Low is a unique opportunity to recover the timeless elegance of Cool Jazz hero Paul Desmond, by getting to know one of the best jazz quartets in Germany.
