With his fifteen string quartets, each more complex and daring than the previous, Beethoven deigned to challenge himself – as well as future generations of composers – to find something significant and unique to contribute to the ever-changing musical landscape. Bartók might very well have met Beethoven’s mandate with his own set of compelling string quartets.
