Established in 1962 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as a mere twelve-piece ensemble, the Gulbenkian Orchestra today boasts a permanent body of sixty-six musicians and a repertoire spanning from the classical period to the 20th century. Each season, in addition to giving their regular series of concerts at Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium, the Orchestra travels to perform at numerous other venues throughout Portugal and around the world. Because of the excellence of the group’s recordings, the Gulbenkian Orchestra name is associated with the most renowned labels, and their releases have been recognised with several prestigious international prizes.
Recently appointed Principal Conductor and Artistic Consultant of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Paul McCreesh distinguished himself through his work with the Gabrieli Consort & Players, an ensemble which he founded and served in the role of Artistic Director, having also established a strong reputation for himself in the field of opera. Over a period of fifteen years, McCreesh produced a relevant record collection for Deutsche Grammophon, recognised with the most prestigious awards including a 2010 Grammy nomination. He also dedicates his time to young musicians, being regularly engaged with international youth orchestras and choirs.
After a long absence, the Gulbenkian Orchestra returns to Macao within the framework of an Asian tour. Don’t miss this concert by one of Portugal’s most prestigious and talented orchestras!
