Since its founding in 1870, the Dresden Philharmonic has been a major driving force in its home city’s musical culture. The orchestra gained worldwide fame in the 1930s and has since attracted the collaboration of great conductors and outstanding musicians. Dedicated to appealing to a diverse audience, the Philharmonic’s repertoire ranges from the classical to the contemporary and includes many new works commissioned by the orchestra.
Michael Sanderling was born and educated in Berlin and has been principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic since the 2011-12 season. He regularly appears with such orchestras as the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
German violinist Julia Fischer is recognised worldwide as an uncommonly talented and exceptionally gifted artist, a fact reflected in the numerous awards and effusive reviews she has received, including being named “Artist of the Year” at The Gramophone Awards in 2007 and winning the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition at the age of 11.
