Dancing to the Sound of Naamyam, a dance coproduction by internationally renowned Hong Kong choreographer Mui Cheuk Yin, noted dancer Xing Liang and local dancers, features live Naamyam singing by Macau master Au Kuan Cheong. Acclaimed Hong Kong musician Kung Chi Shing will be playing alongside Au, enhancing the performance with electronic music. In an effort to re-enact the ambience from Naamyam’s heyday and showcase the allure of this particular art form, the performance will take place at the historic Long Wa Tea House.
Mui Cheuk Yin received training in Chinese classical and ethnic dance in Hong Kong. In 1985, after winning the Hong Kong Young Choreographer Competition, she studied modern dance in New York on a scholarship, becoming an independent choreographer, dancer and teacher. She was invited by Pina Bausch and Folkwang Tanzstudio to choreograph Whispering Colour and to perform as a guest dancer in The Rite of Spring with Tanztheater Wuppertal.
Xing Liang, a Beijing native now based in Hong Kong, has been dubbed the ‘epitome of the exceptional Chinese dancer’ and ‘China’s superstar of modern dance’. Xing has been awarded the Hong Kong Dance Award three times by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance.
After years of decline, Cantonese Naamyam have been rediscovered and are, once again, increasing in popularity. They are inscribed in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Macao S.A.R. as well as in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
