The exceptional Chinese Music Orchestra of the Jiangsu Provincial Performing Arts Group performs lyrical ancient and modern Jiangnan Sizhu music for three consecutive days in the World Heritage-listed Mandarin’s House, enabling music enthusiasts to gradually enter the wondrous world of this style of traditional Chinese instrumental music from the Jiangnan region of China. Sizhu , literally “silk and bamboo”, refers to string and wind musical instruments, and bamboo being the material from which the Chinese flutes such as the dizi and xiao are made. The term sizhu by extension also came to refer to instrumental music in general, especially that played indoors and in informal gatherings, often at tea houses.

Boasting a history of more than half a century, the Chinese Music Orchestra of the Jiangsu Provincial Performing Arts Group has created a unique style over the years, being especially adept in expressing the soft and exquisite music of Jiangnan. The orchestra has toured Europe, the Americas and Asia, receiving praise from audiences, peers and experts, winning a reputation at home and abroad.
