PROGRAMME
R. Strauss: Don Quixote, Op. 35/ Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30
To celebrate the sesquicentennial of Richard Strauss’s birth, the Macao Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Lu Jia presents the concert Meditatorfeaturing two of the composer’s most beloved symphonic poems! In Don Quixote and Also Sprach Zarathustra, Richard Strauss reveals himself as a composer capable of making poetic content and formal design coalesce with great brilliance. Don Quixote musically dramatizes Cervantes’s famous novel of 1605 and describes the adventures of the anti-hero knight Don Quixote, while Zarathustra, based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s long prose poem, depicts humanity not in search for eternity, but rather struggling to transcend religious superstitions. Musically, the solo cello represents Don Quixote’s character, and we are delighted to welcome the artistic mastery and brilliant musical talent of Denis Shapovalov to the Macao stage! A recipient of 1st prize at the highly prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, Shapovalov has been credited with a penetrating musical comprehension, razor-sharp technique and expressive interpretations. He has performed with all major orchestras and soloists worldwide, and features on the most prestigious festivals and musical stages, which includes a recent solo appearance on the North Pole! The violist Sviatoslav Belonogov is the principal viola at the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra since 1997. He won the USSR National Viola Competition in 1988 and the Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet Competition in 1993, and has toured under the baton of worldrenowned conductors. Get ready for an evening of refined virtuosity , exceptional artistic sensitivity, and orchestra magic!
