“Do I say I am old because I am old or am I old because I say I am old?” This is the question that the Portuguese theatre group Teatro Praga sets out to answer in OLD AGE. The actors, before starting, have already retired. People with a past, with wrinkles where we can’t see them. The nearest horizon is death, but melancholy is comedy and despair is laughter. In this play the plot serves as a pretext to deepen the “Who am I?” and the “What is old age all about?”
Old age is time and elderness, knowledge and forgetfulness, arthrosis and pilates. But it is also today and was yesterday. It is an undone construction with familiar words. It is an inevitability to fulfil. A reinvention within the invention. It is, ultimately, the possibility to say, with today’s bodies and the future’s hair: Old age is today and right here. This play does not inaugurate a new age. It is just a continuation. We are all in the same boat.
Founded in 1995, Teatro Praga, based in Lisbon, Portugal, has been regularly creating theatre plays co-produced by the most prestigious contemporary cultural institutions in Portugal and has performed at festivals and events all over Europe.
Teatro Praga is supported by the Government of Portugal – Secretary of State for Culture and the Directorate-General for the Arts, and associated structure of Espaco do Tempo
