Viktoria Mullova’s extraordinary talent captured international attention when she won first prize at the 1980 Sibelius Competition in Helsinki and the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982. Since then, she has appeared with most of the world’s greatest orchestras and conductors. Mullova is known the world over as a violinist of exceptional versatility and musical integrity. Her curiosity spans the breadth of musical development from baroque and classical right up to contemporary influences from the world of fusion and experimental music. Her passion for the Baroque repertoire and a period approach has been critically acclaimed, and her ventures into contemporary music have also been duly recognised, with The Times reporting “she transcends musical origins and fuses music into something genuinely new and beguiling.”

To commemorate the 150th birthday of Jean Sibelius, Viktoria Mullova and the BBC Philharmonic perform the composer’s singularly spectacular Violin Concerto. Symphonic in scope, the work constantly strives, and gloriously succeeds, in balancing virtuosic elements with the musical demands of the dialogue between soloist and orchestra. Framed by Britten’s Simple Symphony, and the extraordinary Enigma Variations by Elgar, the Sibelius Concerto features gorgeous melodies while placing extraordinary technical demands on the soloist. You can’t afford to miss this spectacular musical evening!
