Cantonese Opera, originally known as Grand Opera or Cantonese Grand Opera, stemmed from nanxi (southern drama). It began to appear in the Cantonese-speaking regions of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces during Emperor Jiajing regin of the Ming dynasty. It combines different types of performing arts, such as singing, acting, recitation and acrobatic fighting, music, costumes and abstract forms. In 2009, Cantonese Opera was recognised by UNESCO and inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Macao Chinese Orchestra organises this concert in cooperation with the Cantonese Opera Training Class for Teenagers under the General Union of Neighbour Associations of Macao to support the transmission and development of the culture of Cantonese Opera, and deepen Macao's youth and citizens's understanding of this art.
