Taught by virtuosi Gong Yi, Yu Feng, and Zhao Jiping, Chen majored in guqin, conducting and composition in his undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral years, during which time he also went to France to further his studies, having acquired good command of both Chinese and Western music.

Now teaching at the Central Conservatory of Music, Chen is a prominent figure among contemporary guqin artists. His music features a powerful timbre in perfect pitches, exuding unconstrained yet delicate melodies, and is praised by guqin maestro Gong Yi as ‘a great performer in the guqin circle’.
