Opening of the Macao’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Carnival

In response to the “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” and in order to create an environment favouring cultural heritage protection, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) organizes the “Macao’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Carnival” on 9 and 10 June (Saturday and Sunday), from 12pm to 6pm, at the Mandarin’s House and Lilau Square, for two consecutive days. The opening ceremony of the Carnival was held on 9 June (Sunday), at 3pm, under a lively atmosphere with a performance of the Drunken Dragon Dance.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Wan Sucheng; the Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Leong Wai Man; the Executive Director of Sino-Western Cultural Studies of the Macao Polytechnic Institute, Lam Fat Iam; and the members of the Cultural Heritage Committee, Lei Ip Fei, Ip Tat and Li Jiazeng, and was attended by representatives of several groups heirs to items of intangible cultural heritage.

The Carnival counts on the support of several heirs to items of intangible cultural heritage that will take part in game booths and performances, such as performances of Cantonese opera, Drunken Dragon Dance, Cantonese Naamyam and Taoist Ritual Music, among others, jointly promoting Macao’s intangible cultural heritage. In addition, a workshop on the Craft of Bamboo Scaffolding, lectures on intangible heritage and exhibitions will also be organised during the Carnival. The Carnival offers a rich variety of activities, providing cultural activities for families and attracting them to participate in a lively and interesting way, thereby promoting the transmission and sustainability of Macao’s intangible cultural heritage items.

Admission to activities of the Carnival is free. A stamp-collecting activity will also be available at the Carnival for game participants to redeem souvenirs with a specified number of game stamps collected after playing games. The souvenirs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents and tourists are welcome to participate and feel the lively atmosphere.
