“A Cherished Memory from 1999──Archives Exhibition in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao to the Motherland” opens in Lisbon, Portugal

“A Cherished Memory from 1999──Archives Exhibition in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao to the Motherland”, organized by the Archives of Macao, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was inaugurated on 9 October, at the Office of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao in Lisbon. The opening ceremony was held in a lively atmosphere and was officiated by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Portugal, Cai Run; the Director of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao in Lisbon, O Tin Lin; and the Director of the Archives of Macao, Lau Fong.

In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the return of Macao to the Motherland, the Archives of Macao showcases a selection of over seventy image records from the collection of the Committee for Celebration Activities from All Sectors for the Return of Macao to the People's Republic of China (CDMSP) to share important moments and milestones of the reunification and revive a unique and unrepeatable collective memory that has been cherished for long. With less than a year to go to the momentous event, the CDMSP, which was composed of representatives from different sectors and associations in the community, was established to organize and coordinate the celebrations for the reunification of Macao with the Motherland and encourage public participation in the activities. The celebration is the largest scale ceremony in Macao’s history before Macao’s return to the Motherland in the aspects of diversity of its performance, the number of participants and the high scale of the work.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Portugal, Xu Zhida; the Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Portugal, Li Ji; the former Ambassador of Portugal in China, Santana Carlos; the former Governors of Macao, José Eduardo Martinho Garcia Leandro and Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira; the former President of the Cultural Institute of Macao, Gabriela Pombas Cabelo; the President of the International Institute of Macau, Jorge Rangel; the President of the Luso-Chinese Association of Commerce and Industry, Choi Man Hin; the representatives of the Chinese community and enterprises in Portugal; as well as experts and academics. “A Cherished Memory from 1999 ── Archives Exhibition in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao to the Motherland” is held from 10 October to 27 December 2019, at the Office of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao, located at No. 115, Avenida de Cinco de Outubro, Lisbon, and is open from 10am to 7pm, from Monday to Friday, and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Admission is free.
