The Jao Tsung-I Academy, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is now hosting the exhibition “Jao Tsung-I’s Painting and Calligraphy from the Collection of the Macao Museum of Art”, in which 13 selected works from the collection are displayed to give the public a glimpse into his erudition and diverse creations. The exhibition is held until 28 March 2021, and all are welcome to visit.

Professor Jao Tsung-I has devoted immense support to Macao’s culture and generously donated 30 pieces (sets) of paintings and calligraphic works in 2011 for the permanent collection of the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). In order to promote Professor Jao’s artistic accomplishments to the public, the Cultural Affairs Bureau presents his works in the exhibition rooms on the ground and first floors of the Jao Tsung-I Academy, which were created in various styles and with a wide range of subject matter, including traditional Chinese calligraphy in four fundamental scripts and paintings on landscapes, flowers, trees, bamboos, stones, Taoist and Buddhist figures.

Professor Jao Tsung-I was a world-renowned sinologist who has made prominent achievements and outstanding contributions in the fields of literature, art and academia, and is hailed as “a leading figure of the three disciplines”. He advocated a concurrent pursuit in academia and art; in addition to the techniques he learned from predecessors, his academic knowledge and observation of natural scenery also play an essential role in his artistic creation. In his calligraphy and paintings, he has inherited the remarkable literati traditions from the Ming and Qing dynasties. His Chinese paintings comprise a wide variety of themes including landscapes, human figures, flowers and birds; some of his works emulate the traditional schools of techniques while some are landscape sketches of the world’s beautiful scenery, and some are creations of his own. He has developed his own painting style by learning from various masters; in calligraphy, he is deeply rooted in ancient scripts and has integrated ancient scripts into his works.

The Jao Tsung-I Academy is located on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, Macao. Admission is free. The Academy is open daily from 10am to 6pm (no admission after 5:30pm), including public holidays, and is closed on Mondays.
