Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the 20th Macao City Fringe Festival will be held from 20 to 31 January, featuring 18 extraordinary programmes and 17 outreach activities. Adopting the concept of “All around the city, our stages, our patrons, our artists”, this year’s Fringe Festival features a new participatory exhibition entitled “Art Exhibition for All”, offering the members of the public an exhibition stage to display their creative works. All interested parties are welcome to submit works or improvise.

The “Art Exhibition for All” will be held from 20 to 25 January at the Rotunda de Carlos da Maia and from 26 to 31 January next to the Flower City Park. Interested parties can submit the completed application forms and artworks on 19 January at the Cultural Affairs Bureau Building located at Tap Siac Square during office hours, or present the artworks at the exhibition site between 20 and 31 January. Creativity comes first, regardless of forms and themes. An improvisation zone is also available on-site for the members of the public to express their creativity, showing the concept that everyone can be an artist. Application forms can be downloaded from IC’s website at www.icm.gov.mo or from the Fringe Festival’s website at www.macaucityfringe.gov.mo. The application notes and regulations are indicated on the application forms.

This year’s Fringe Festival, featuring a series of extraordinary performances, promotes humanistic concerns. The series “Crème de la Fringe: Todos Fest!” by the Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association, presents the programme The Never-ending Task of the Moment on 20 and 21 January, at 8pm, at the Old Court Building Black Box Theatre. Jenny Mok will lead people with mental and physical disabilities to express their own experiences, understanding and desires through various means, including language, dance, music, images and videos. Stair climbing service is available and registration can be made through tel. no. 8399 6872 on or before 16 January. The programme Treetalk will be held from 23 to 24 January, at 8pm, at Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, allowing the public to appreciate a dance piece choreographed by elderly people, which leads them to revisit their own experiences and memories as well as narrate the stories of trees and lands. In “Art has no Boundaries” – Seminar on Artistic Development of Disadvantaged Groups in the Community, professionals, artists and representatives of social service organizations will discuss “the development of art and the elderly” and “the development and popularization of art for people with disabilities”. In addition, A Gentlemen’s Fight with Puns and Tea will be held on 29 and 30 January, at the Tai Long Fong Tea House, featuring various forms of verbal performance art, including Chinese cross-talk, witty dialogues and stand-up comedy. For the outreach activities, the online meeting “Webinar: Connect with the Festivals’ Representatives” shows how the technology breaks the barriers. Three renowned overseas curators of the Fringe Festival and an art review magazine founder will share their experiences of curating a festival and explore the relationships between art, city, life and emotions. In Fringe Chat, critics from Mainland China and Macao will shuttle through various performances of the Fringe Festival, and discuss with the audience and artists the features and heartbeats of the Fringe Festival.
