Produced by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) and directed by Lao Keng U, the documentary “Interpretation of Images” on Macao’s screening industry, participated in the 2021 Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, China (GZDOC) and was screened in cinemas in Guangzhou and Shenzhen as the main documentary feature of the 8th Golden Kapok Screening, depicting the history of Macao’s cinemas and screening industry over the past century.

The GZDOC, hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, is composed of three main parts—Competition, Screening and DOCSHOP. The 8th Golden Kapok Screening was held from 8 to 16 January screening nearly 30 outstanding Chinese and foreign documentaries of all kinds in two cinemas in Guangzhou and two in Shenzhen. The opening ceremony was held recently (8 January), at the Palace cinema (Parc Central) in Guangzhou. The President of the IC, Mok Ian Ian, participated in the ceremony via video and shared with the audience the highlights of the documentary “Interpretation of Images”. Through the documentary, the audience learnt about the culture and history of Macao and gained a deeper understanding and awareness of the city’s film and television industry.

“Interpretation of Images”, produced by the IC and directed by Lao Keng U, shows the creative force behind the local film and television practitioners. Through the interviews with historians and cinema practitioners, the documentary tells the story of the vicissitudes of Macao’s screening industry over the past century and presents the evolution of the industry from the opening of the first cinema, the Victoria Theatre, in 1910, the golden era, decline to recovery to demonstrate the century-old development of Macao’s film industry. IC hopes to present the cultural landscape of the city from a fascinating historical perspective through the documentary, and to enhance residents’ and tourists’ support for and awareness of the film and television industry in Macao, and therefore encourage the development of local film and television productions.

The documentary “Interpretation of Images” is screened at the Exhibition Hall on the second floor of Cinematheque·Passion, which is running concurrently with an exhibition at the venue, at No. 9 and No. 11, Travessa da Paixão. The Cultural Affairs Bureau sought to develop an exhibition space that introduces Macao’s film industry through the combination of physical and visual materials, showcases the individuals, incidents and artefacts behind the scenes that have led to the growth of the industry, and relates the history and stories of Macao’s century-old cinema development.

All visitors must comply with the relevant epidemic prevention measures and crowd control measures on-site.
