Liu currently is the principal oboe of San Francisco Opera, resident faculty of The Tianjin Julliard School and the artist-faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School.
A native of Qingdao in China, Liu furthered his studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the United States under Robert Walters and Alex Klein after graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music Middle School in China. In 2009, he was appointed as principal oboe of the Kansas City Symphony.
He has appeared as a guest oboist or soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and China National Symphony Orchestra. As an educator, he joined the oboe faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2015. In 2018, he was elected as the vice president of the International Double Reed Association Society.
