Xu is a national first class performer and a professor at the Department of Chinese Music of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and joined the faculty upon graduation. She was a soloist of the China National Traditional Orchestra, and has been teaching at the Department of Chinese Music of HKAPA since 1995.

As a soloist, she has held guzheng solo recitals in the Golden Hall in Vienna, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, among many others. Orchestras she has performed with include the China National Traditional Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Recently, she was invited to give talks in the Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Taiwan University of Arts, to name a few, and was the adjudicator of many national and international competitions. Her academic essays were published in the leading journals in China, seminars and international academic symposiums. Her artistic accomplishment has been recorded in the China Music: Guzheng Volume.
