Type Music Competition

The 22nd Macao Youth Music Competition continues like a raging fire. After a series of intense competitions, winners for the categories of Violin, Erhu and Wind Concerto were announced. Macao teenagers’ love for music has won approval and praises from the judges.

The Violin Solo Group A (Beginner Level) competition was held in the Small Auditorium of the Macao Cultural Centre. This competition has attracted 18 young contestants aged from 7 to 14. In this competition, all contestants had to play Beethoven’s Minuet in G Major, Glinka’s Innocent and one piece of their own choice. Chong Ngai Kei won the first prize and Lok Cheng Man won the second prize.

After the competition, Tong Wei Dong, one of the judges in the competition and an associate professor of violin teaching in Central Conservatory of Music, said that the contestants’ rich musical sense has revealed Macao’s good musical education. The Cello Solo Group A (Beginner Level) was also held in the Macao Cultural Centre. Leong Chon Seng won the first prize with a high score of 91 points. Leong Chong Hang and Choi Sin I won the second and third prizes respectively.

The Erhu Solo Group B (Intermediate Level) competition was held in the Auditorium of the Macao Museum. Although there were only five contestants, every contestant did their best to compete for awards. Lio Hio Chong received a certificate of merit with 84 points. The Erhu Solo Group C (Advanced Level) also had five contestants. Cheong Veng Va received a certificate of merit with 86 points.

The Wind Concerto competition, which was held in the Auditorium of the Macao Polytechnic Institute, was very intense due to the high level of performance. Wong Ieng Wai won the first prize with 91 points. Wong has already won a first prize in the Flute Solo Group A competition. Kou Pui I and Che Wai Si won the second and third price respectively in this competition. Kou and Che have also won first and second prizes respectively in the Flute Solo Group C competition.

The above winners will be able to perform in the “Concert of the Winners” which will take place at 20:00 on May 23 in the Auditorium of the Macao Polytechnic Institute. Tickets can be bought during the competitions (MOP$20 each), or contact Ms. Cheang at 7993127. The Cultural Institute will also invite some of the outstanding winners of the last and present MYMC to perform with famous cellist Qin Liwei in the “Flourishing Art” Concert, which will be held in the Grand Auditorium of the Macao Cultural Centre at 20:00 on May 29.
