The “37th Macao Young Musicians Competition”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was successfully held from 19 July to 1 August. During this period, a total of 24 contests in 17 categories were held. The “Special Prizes Competition” was held on 4 August. Ho Chi Ieng won the “Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize” with her exquisite performance and the winners of the other special prizes were also announced. The Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chan Kai Chon, the Acting Head of Department of Performing Arts Development, Wong Wing Tai, Acting Head of Division of Performing Arts, U Weng Hong, as well as the jury, Gabriel Kwok, Jackson Leung and Yi Fan-Chiang were there to present awards.
The winner of this year's “Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize”, Ho Chi Ieng, is 15 years old. She also won the first prizes of the contests in three advanced categories. She has been learning piano from Wong Hio Cheng, president of the Associação de Música Cultura de Jovem de Macau, since the age of 4, and has often participated in competitions and performances both at home and abroad, winning many prizes. She also won the gold medal in the “Senior C Category” of the 23rd Japan Hamamatsu PIARA Piano Competition in July. The “Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize” will be awarded in the form of scholarships to cover the first year tuition fee of relevant undergraduate or precollege division music course.
The contests of all other categories of the Special Prizes Competition were also extraordinary and the prizes were competed by those who ranked first in each of the categories. Kong Wai Kio Kristen and Kong Wai Ka Ashley won the “Best Ensemble Performance”, Sze Weng Lam won the “Best Performance in Elementary Category”, Kong Wai Kio Kristen won the “Best Performance in Intermediate Category”.
