1Introduction
The “Macao Young Musicians Competition” aims to promote the development of classical music in Macao and provide valuable performance platforms and learning opportunities for young local musicians and encourage potential young musicians to gradually embark on a professional career. The competition is set up to feature the Piano category in odd-numbered years and the Chinese Instruments and Western Instruments category in even-numbered years. The 43rd Macao Young Musicians Competition in 2025 is dedicated to piano category.

- Notes for Registration
- Participant should use the name identical to his/her Macao Resident ID Card.
- Participants may compete in no more than three categories and shall choose either the elementary, intermediate or advanced level.
- Participants should enter the competition level that matches their level of musical competence or ability. Winners of First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, Distinction or Merit at any level in previous sessions of the ‘Macao Young Musicians Competition’ are deemed to have reached the respective level and are not allowed to participate in a lower level in this year’s Competition. If any Participant is found to have applied for a level that does not tally with their level of musical competence, the Organiser reserves the right to disqualify the Participant from that competition category and cancel their prizes (if any).
- First-prize winners in any solo categories in previous sessions of the ‘Macao Young Musicians Competition’ are not eligible to compete in the same category again.
- First-prize winning teams in the categories of Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music in previous sessions of the ‘Macao Young Musicians Competition’ are not allowed to participate in the same category with the same members again.
- Current or previous students majoring in a relevant music instrument performance in a diploma or associate degree or Bachelor’s degree programme (e.g. Music Performance in the Bachelor of Arts in Music programme at Macau Polytechnic University etc.) or above at any music academy or higher education institution, as well as students of a high school affiliated to a music academy (e.g. students of full-time programmes at the School of Music of Macao Conservatory and Music Vocational Courses in Secondary Section at Macau Baptist College etc.), and full-time musicians engaging in the relevant musical instrument or vocal performance, are not eligible to participate in the competition.
- Participants must upload a copy of the score of their free choice pieces on the competition system when registering for the competition for the judges' reference; Participants in the Concerto category must upload a copy of the music score for the piano soloist and accompanists; those in the Piano four-hands categories must upload a copy of music score for the four hands; those in the piano chamber music category must upload a copy of music scores for the piano and other instrument; the Organizer will destroy the relevant scores after the competition.
- The music score uploaded by participants must only contain the part to be performed in the competition and must be clear and correct. Participants shall be held solely responsible for the consequences of any score-related issues.
- Participants are not allowed to compete with the same free choice piece in more than one category in this year’s competition or compete with the free choice piece which is the same as the compulsory pieces of the categories which the participants compete in, or to compete with the free choice pieces or compulsory pieces with which they have won prizes in previous sessions of the ‘Macao Young Musician Competition.’ Participants violating such rules will only be given a written assessment instead of a score and cannot compete for any prize.
- Participants must handle by themselves any issues relating to the copyright of the piece to be performed and take all the relevant responsibility.
- No age limit is set for accompanists in the Piano Concerto category, and submission of the accompanists’ personal information is not required during the application process. However, Participants are required to present a copy of the accompanists’ valid identification documents for registration during the designated check-in time on the Competition Date.
- All instrumental sections in the categories of Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music are of equal importance. The ensemble representatives and members participating in the categories of Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music are deemed to be participants rather than accompanists, and therefore must submit the required application documents according to the Rules and Regulations.
- No Participant shall be a member of two or more ensembles competing in the same “Piano Four Hands” or “Piano Chamber Music” Category.
- Participants are not allowed to use non-ensemble music pieces, such as concertos, as the free choice piece to compete in Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music categories. If any Participant is found to use non-ensemble music pieces to compete in the said categories, the Judges shall decide whether his or her overall score will be affected.
- When necessary, the Organiser will notify Participants to submit supplementary documents within a specific period. Participants who fail to submit the required supplementary documents within the set period will be disqualified.
- If the number of participants or ensembles enrolled in a category is less than five, the Organiser reserves the right to cancel the relevant competition and the participants may not raise any objections. The registration fee will be refunded under such circumstances.
- Except for the aforementioned circumstances, the registration fee, once paid, is non-refundable.
- Upon registration, participants will be deemed to have agreed that the Organiser can photograph, record and film their performance and the relevant photos, audio files, and videos will only be used for the record, archive, assessment, selection, or publicity purposes by the Organiser, and their copyright belongs to the Organiser, and no further notifications will be given. Participants cannot request the relevant photos, audio files or videos from the Organiser for any reason.
- Upon registration, participants will be deemed to have agreed that the Organiser can forward their personal data and competition details (such as their name, contact information and performance videos) to a third-party staff member in or outside the city for competition-related work, assessment or selection purposes, and that the Organiser can broadcast their performance videos online in a non-public manner for relevant personnel to view.
- When performing on the stage, the accompanist (if any) will be deemed to have agreed and accepted that the Organiser can handle their personal data in the manner stated in Clauses 4.2.18 and 4.2.19. Participants are obliged to ensure the accompanist acknowledges and consents to this. In case of any dispute, the participant shall be held solely responsible.
- Application Method

1. Registration is considered successful only after participants have submitted the registration form online, pay the registration fee online and receive a confirmation email and SMS via mobile phone. If you do not receive the relevant email and SMS after payment, please contact the organiser to verify whether your registration is successful, or else the participants will be solely responsible for the consequences.
2. Please refer to the regulation stated in Clause 4.2.15.
3. Please visit the “Macao One Account” website or call the responsible department to check the time and documents required to open an account. Additional time and documents may be needed in certain circumstances. No late registration will be accepted for participants who are not able to compete the registration procedures within the registration period due to the failure to open an account in the “Macao One Account” in advance.
4. The organizer provides on-site inquiry and assistance services for "Online Registration and Payment". If necessary, please prepare the Participant’s "Macao One Account" account username and password, electronic payment tools and the music scores of the free choice piece (if applicable), and visit the Cultural Affairs Bureau Building at Tap Siac Square at the scheduled time. Our staff will assist you in completing the registration procedures.
5. Please refer to the regulation stated in Clause 4.2.8.
- Submission by Authorised Representative or Group Registration
- To safeguard the rights and interests of Participants, they are recommended to complete the online registration and payment via the ‘registration system’ in person. As for ensembles, a representative must be authorised by ensemble members via the ‘registration system’ and the authorised representative can complete the online registration and payment, submit applications, and check the scores and written assessment for the ensemble on behalf of other members. Other members of the ensemble only have the right to check.
- If any solo participants or ensemble representatives are unable to complete the online registration and payment in person, an institution must be authorised via the ‘registration system’ to proceed with online registration and payment, application submission, and checking of the scores and written assessment via the ‘registration system’ on their behalf. The solo participants or ensemble representatives still have those rights even after they have authorised another institution to do so. If the solo participants or ensemble representatives need to authorise an institution for group registration, the authorised institution must log into the ‘registration system’ and sign up with their entity’s ‘Macao One Account’.
- The Participant shall be solely responsible for any information that is omitted or in error, or any consequences arising from the Participant’s improper authorisation, or any mistake made by the authorised party, the Cultural Affairs Bureau will not assume any responsibility nor accept any relevant appeal.
- Notes on Changes of Information
- Participants are not allowed to change their competition categories, levels and pieces (either free choice or compulsory pieces) after payment; members cannot be added, withdrawn or changed, and representatives cannot be renamed for ensemble categories.
- After the competition schedule (provisional list) has been announced, participants may request to change the performance order with reasonable grounds, such as a time clash between the competition and compulsory school activities. Participants can complete and print the Request Form for Change of Performance Order via the ‘registration system’ and submit the signed request form together with relevant supporting documents (such as proof issued by the school) to the Cultural Affairs Bureau Building in person by 14 May (during office hours). The Organiser (the Cultural Affairs Bureau, IC) will review the request according to the jury’s opinions, venue or other technical issues and inform the Participant whether the request is approved or denied. The Organiser (IC) will notify the Participant concerned if they approve the request. In case it is not approved, the Participant must perform in the original order and will be disqualified by the Organiser if they fail to do so.
- After the designated date mentioned in 4.5.2, if any participant needs to change the performance order at short notice with reasonable grounds, for instance, if participants have to seek medical attention for unforeseeable reasons and the consultation time clashes with the competition, participants can complete and print the Request Form for Change of Performance Order via the ‘registration system’, and submit the signed request together with relevant supporting documents (such as proof issued by the hospital) to the Cultural Affairs Bureau Building or competition venue in person at least 2 working days before the competition. The Organiser (IC) will review the request according to the jury’s opinions, venue or other technical issues and inform the participants whether the request is approved or denied. The Organiser (IC) will notify the participant concerned if they approve the request. In case the request is not approved, the participant must perform in the original order and will be disqualified by the Organiser if they fail to do so.
- To protect the rights and interests of Participants, the ‘Request of Change of Performance Order’ must be submitted in person by the Participants themselves. If the Participants or ensemble representatives are not able to submit the form personally, they must fill in the ‘Authorisation’ section of the form for others to submit on their behalf, and the authorised person must present their valid Macao Resident ID Card for verification when submitting the form. For regulations regarding the Authorisation Letter, please refer to the following:

5Loaning Musical Instruments and Warm-up Room
- A grand piano (A=442) and music stands are available at the competition venue for participants to use. No application is required;
- A piano pedal riser is available to lend, participants are not allowed to use their own pedal riser. Borrow request needs to be made during Online Registration, and confirmed during check in at the competition venue. No change is accepted upon confirmation.
- Participants must ensure that the loaned musical instruments are in good shape without any damage after use. If there is any damage or destruction, such as caused by hitting the piano body, plucking the piano strings, or placing objects on the piano strings, the Organiser reserves the right to claim compensation from the Participants;
- Warm-up room and an upright piano (A=442) are available for participants; schedule for using the warm-up room will be arranged by the Organiser on-site according to performance order of competition.
6Competition Rules
- The order of performance will be determined by the Organiser by computer ballot and participants must perform according to the allocated order.
- Participants in the concerto category must perform with their accompanist(s). If the accompanist(s) is/are absent at the scheduled time of the performance, the Participants will be deemed to be waiving the right to participate in the competition and thus forbidden to perform.
- Rules on the competition pieces and
music scores are as follows:
- Participants other than those in the Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music categories and accompanists in the Concerto category must memorise the music score.
- Participants of the Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music categories and accompanists of the Piano Concerto category are responsible for ensuring their use of legal copies of music scores. Should they have difficulties in page turning with legal copies, they may arrange their own page turner.
- If Participants of the Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music categories and Accompanists of the Piano Concerto category need to use the following types of music scores during the competition, Participants must submit a "Sheet Music Copyright Declaration Letter" before the competition to prove that the music scores are authorized for legally use and that the Participants will take sole responsibility for any issues related to the copyright.
(a) a copy of an authentic musical score;
(b) published electronic musical scores;
(c) unpublished musical scores;
(d) musical scores in the public domain;
(e) reading the above types of scores (a) to (d) with electronic products. - Participants must perform the pieces specified on their registration forms.
- If there is a compulsory piece and a free choice piece in the same category, the compulsory piece must be played first.
- Participants in violation of the rules set in clauses 6.3.1 to 6.3.5 will only be given a written assessment in lieu of a score, and thus cannot compete for any prizes.
- The "Sheet Music Copyright Declaration Letter" mentioned in clause 6.3.3 above should be submitted in the competition system on or before July 9.
- Participants should follow the music score to complete their performance. If Participant deviates from the notation, the Judges shall decide whether his or her overall score will be affected.
- Participants shall not play repeats or first endings unless otherwise stated explicitly in the “Competition Repertories”, Da Capo (D.C.) and Dal Segno (D.S.) should be played as instructed. If Participants are in violation of this rule, the Judges shall decide whether his or her overall score will be affected.
- Participants performing a free choice piece must complete the performance within the time limit specified in the Competition Repertoire list. When the time limit is reached, the organizer will ring the bell twice to signal the Participant to stop playing. The Participant must stop playing immediately. If the Participant continues after the bell has rung twice, the organizer will ring the bell three times, and 3 points will be deducted from their total average score (calculated for each piece).
- After the registration is complete, the organizer reserves the right to add/modify the time limit for the participants’ performances based on the actual number of registrations, in accordance with the provisions in clauses 6.3.11.1 to 6.3.11.2:
- The Organiser will announce the change of performance time limit on the competition schedule (provisional) on the competition website on April 30;
- If a time limit is added/modified, except those in the Piano Concerto Category, participants must start playing from the first bar, including the pre-beat (if any); accompanists in the Piano Concerto Category must start playing at most 8 bars before the start of the solo part. If the time limit is reached, the Organiser will ring the bell twice to signal the Participant to stop playing. The Participant must stop playing immediately. If the Participant continues after the bell has rung twice, the Organiser will ring the bell three times and 3 points will be deducted from their total average score (calculated for each piece). For example, the time limit for the free choice piece was initially 10 minutes but is modified to 5 minutes after the registration due to actual needs, or if there was initially no time limit for the compulsory piece, but a limit of 3 minutes is added after the registration. These are only examples for reference. Please pay attention to the actual time limits specified in the provisional competition schedule.
- If any participant is a relative of any member of the judging panel, or has been a long-term or short term student of or has business interests with any of the judges (e.g. in any full-time course at a music school or any master class) in the past two years as of the competition date of the relevant category, the participant or the judge must report the relationship to the Organiser prior to the competition. The judge concerned will not evaluate the Participant’s performance. The Organiser reserves the right to disqualify the Participant and rescind any awards and prizes granted if it is discovered that the Participant concealed any relationship that they have or had with one of the judges.
- Judges may require a participant to stop playing if they believe the performance up to the requested stop is sufficient to arrive at a fair decision; on the contrary, Judges may ask a participant to repeat the piece(s) if they are unable to assess his or her previous performance.
- Participants are prohibited from having any contact with Judges before the announcement of the competition results. Those in violation will be disqualified and any possible prizes will also be cancelled.
- Participants must strictly follow the arrangements of the onsite staff and the Organiser reserves the right to disqualify those who fail to follow the relevant arrangements.
7Notes on Checking In
- Participants must check-in at the competition venue at the designated time by presenting the original copy of their valid Macao Resident ID Cards or the electronic ID card with dynamic anti-counterfeiting elements (such as real-time jumping time) to collect a competition number of performance order. Participants who only present a copy of their valid Macao Resident ID Card can still perform on stage but will only be given a written assessment in lieu of a score, and thus cannot compete for any prizes. Participants who fail to present their original valid Macao Resident ID Card or a copy will not be permitted to perform on the stage.
- If there is an accompanist, the Participant must present a copy of the accompanist’s valid Macao Resident Identity Card or other identification document for registration and to collect the accompanist’s competition number at the time of registration.
- Participants failing to obtain their performance number at the reception desk at the designated time will be regarded as ‘late’. Though permitted to perform, a late Participant will only be given a written assessment in lieu of a score, and thus cannot compete for any prizes.
- Participants who fail to appear on stage after their names have been called three times will be seen as withdrawn from competition and will not be allowed to perform on stage.
8Composition of the Consulting Panel, Jury, Scoring Criteria and Awards
- Composition of the Consultant
The competition’s consulting panel comprise 5 music and art administration professionals from outside Macao, such as Singapore, Canada, mainland China and Hong Kong, including heads of art administration teams, pianists, or university and music school professors (the actual list and number of consultants depend on the professionals’ availability, qualifications, and other factors). The consultants are responsible for providing professional advice on the system, overall planning and other aspects of CJMM, and do not have the right to score the participants or determine the competition results. - Composition of the Jury
The jury for each category consists of three music professionals from outside Macao, such as mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, including pianists as well as music teachers from universities and conservatories of music (the final list of judges depends upon the schedule and qualifications of judges and other factors). Judges have the right to score the participants and determine the competition results. - Assessment Criteria
- Competition results are graded on a scale of 0 to 100 points.
- Solo or ensemble participants must perform in accordance with the techniques written on the score, and present the overall understanding of the work, including the musical features, the harmonic structure, the musicality and musical appeal, etc.
- Competition results will be calculated according to the average of the Judges’ total scores, rounded to two decimal places.
- Judges reserve the right to make the final decision on all music-related issues. All scoring decisions made are final and participants must respect and accept those decisions. The Organiser does not accept any appeal filed against the judges’ scores.
- All Category Prizes
- There are First Prizes, Second Prizes, Third Prizes, Distinctions and Merits in each category. Results will be announced after the competition, and will be uploaded on the Macao Young Musicians Competition website no later than 3 working days after the competition.
- Participants with a score of 75 or above will be awarded a “Merit” certificate and with a score of 85 or above will be awarded a “Distinction” certificate.
- The First, Second and Third prizes are awarded to participants with the top three scores of 85 or above. Prize winners will be presented with a cash award and a certificate. However, the Judges reserve the right to withhold the awarding of any of the above prizes and, instead, award “Distinction” to any of the top scoring participants when the Judges are dissatisfied with the artistic achievements of the top scorers even if any of them reached a score of 85 or above.
- Cash Awards of All Categories (to be announced)
- Special Prizes Competition
- All the First Prize winners of Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels in each category, or any participant recommended by the Judges, can compete in the Competition for Special Prizes.
- Special Prize Competition awards are contended for by at least 3 participants. If there are less than 3 participants, the awards will be cancelled.
- If a participant receives more than one First Prize in different categories, his/her qualification for the Special Prizes Competition will be related to categories he/she won.
- Participants only need to perform one musical piece chosen from the competition piece(s) of the category which who won the first prize or was recommended to enter the Special Prizes Competition.
- Participants with top scores of 85 or above will be awarded the titles "Best Performance in Elementary Category", "Best Performance in Intermediate Category" and "Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize" for solo elementary, intermediate and advanced category,
- The Organiser (Cultural Affairs Bureau) reserves the right not to award prizes in the Special Prizes Competition when no performance in the category qualifies;
- Results will be announced after the competition and will be uploaded on Macao Young Musicians Competition website no later than 3 working days after the special prize competition.
- Special Prizes and Eligibility

- Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize
- The Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize is awarded to the Grand Champion of the Special Prize Competition in the solo advanced category.
- The Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize will be issued within the awarding year. The amount of the Cash Award will be announced later.
- Wright State University Scholarship
Offered by Wright State University School of Music, Dr. & Mrs. Daniel Tse, as well as Mrs. Irene Romanowski, the Wright State University Scholarship awards are for recipients who enroll in an undergraduate programme of Piano Performance, Music Education or Music History and Literature at the university.- The scholarship will be awarded to one or more Award Winners of the top three prizes in the piano solo categories who are in secondary school Form 5 or above or any Participants recommended by the Judges;
- The Wright State University Scholarship is selected from participants in a non-open audition by representatives from the Wright State University. The representatives reserve the rights of final decision and interpretation of the scholarship.
- The scholarship is awarded as a partial tuition fee waiver. Each awardee will be awarded, in four years, the following amount of scholarship: Wright State University School of music and Dr. & Mrs. Daniel Tse, a maximum of US$ 24,000.00 scholarship; Wright State University School of music and Mrs. Irene Romanowski, a maximum of US$ 16,000.00 scholarship.
- All scholarship winners must be recommended by the representatives from the Wright State University, and the University reserves the final right in awarding this scholarship.
9Issue of Score Cards, Cash Awards and Certificates
- The electronic score cards will be uploaded to the competition system within 3 working days after the competition and will be available for download until 10 October (provisional). The score cards will be unavailable for download after 10 October (provisional) and will not be re-issued.
- Cash awards and certificates for the winners in the Solo categories and Solo winners in the Special Prize Competition will be presented to the winners directly. Cash awards and certificates for winners in the Piano Four-Hands & Chamber Music categories will be presented to the representatives of the winning ensembles directly.
- The cash awards will be directly transferred into the Macao bank accounts provided by the winners / representatives of the winning ensembles. The winners / representatives of the winning ensembles must submit their bank details by 15 August in the registration system, and those who fail to provide such information will be deemed as renouncing the cash awards.
- Winners/representatives of the winning ensembles should collect their certificates at the IC Building in Tap Siac Square in person from 19 to 21 September 13:00 to 18:00 (provisional) by presenting their valid Macao Resident ID Card and the QR code for prize collection generated in the competition system. Those who do not to collect their certificates within the aforesaid time period must submit a written application for them to be reissued. Unclaimed certificates will be discarded after 10 October (provisional) and will not be retained.
- If the winner or the representative of the winning ensemble is unable to collect the certificate in person, they can assign a representative to collect it on their behalf. The representative should collect the certificate within the aforesaid time period at the aforesaid location stated in Clause 9.4 by presenting the winner or the representative of the winning ensemble’s valid Macao Resident ID Card (original or copy) and the award collecting QR code generated in the competition system as well as his/her own valid Identity document for registration. The winner or the representative of the winning ensemble is responsible for ensuring that both he/she and the representative properly safeguard the aforesaid QR code. If any loss occurs due to improper handling of the QR code, the winner or the representative of the winning ensemble must bear the related responsibility.

- If Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued during the competition, Organiser may reschedule or continue the competition according to actual circumstances; participants may decide to stay or not when the competition continues. There will be no rescheduling if the participants decide not to stay.
- Organiser will announce the news via the website or SMS to mobile phone numbers provided by participants upon registration.
11Registration System
- When enrolling through the registration system for the Macao Young Musicians Competition, participants will be required to provide their basic personal information (including Macao Resident ID Card number).
- The participants’ information is collected for registration purposes and for facilitating the Organiser to provide the participants with important details related to the competition. The registration system will be unable to proceed with the registration of those who fail to provide the necessary information.
- Participants must ensure the authenticity, accuracy and completeness of the data provided. The Organiser shall have the right to cancel the participant’s registration without notice if they have reasonable doubt about the validity of the information provided.
- All the personal information provided through the registration system is protected through the high-level security system of IC and can only be accessed by authorised personnel.
- When enrolling through the registration system, participants are deemed to have accepted the privacy policy stated on the system.
12Notice to Audience
- Competitions are open to public aged 6 or above.
- The seating capacity at the competition venue is limited and are not assigned.I It is available on a first-come, first served basis.
- Filming and photographing with a flash, which may disturb the participants and Judges, are prohibited in the competition venue. Use of phone is prohibited, audiences are requested to turn phones or other beeping devices onto silent mode.
- Eating and drinking or possession of plastic bags and/or objects considered dangerous are prohibited in the competition venue.
- The audience must strictly follow the arrangements of the onsite staff.
- Audience members in violation of the rules set in clause 12.3 to 12.5 abovementioned, or cause undue disturbance in competition venues may be asked to leave the venue.
13Others
- By registering for the competition, the participants acknowledge and agree all the Rules and Regulations promulgated here.
- Any changes to the Rules and Regulations will be published on the Macao Young Musicians Competition website, and the latest information announced online shall prevail.
- Unless otherwise specified by the Organiser, any updates or results announced by the Organiser are open to enquiries or complaints from the participants for one week. If there are no enquiries or complaints after this period, the updates or results will be deemed as agreed and the Organiser shall have the right to refuse any relevant enquiries or complaints.
- The Organizer reserves all rights of final decision and interpretation of this Regulation.
