Exhibition of Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery Skill Art of Jiangsu Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region inaugurated showcasing unique artworks from both regions

Organized by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) of the Macao SAR Government, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jiangsu Province and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and co-organized by the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R. and the Centre for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, “The World at their Fingertips – Exhibition of Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery Skill Art of Jiangsu Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region” was inaugurated on 21 January at the Chun Chou Tong Pavilion of the Lou Lim Ioc Garden. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., Wan Sucheng; the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Mok Ian Ian; the Chairman of Administration Committee on Municipal Affairs, Jose Maria da Fonseca Tavares; the Deputy Director of the Centre for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Jing; the Director of Jiangsu Cultural Museum and Director of Jiangsu Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, Dai Heng; the Researcher of the Division of Art of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Bai Hua; and the Director of Macao Daily News, Lok Po.

Dedicated to traditional crafts, the Spring Festival exhibition showcases over 200 pieces (sets) of the unique artworks from Jiangsu Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in a novel and intriguing way. Artworks from the two regions, which are representative areas of weaving, dyeing and embroidery skills of the Han Chinese and ethnic minorities, are known for their advanced craftsmanship. Those from Jiangsu Province are exquisitely made with brightly coloured quality materials, while those from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are created with a broad palette of colours and a strong ethnic touch. All the artworks are highly practical and highly valuable for research due to their embodiment of the cultural essence of China.

In order to allow the public to experience the fun of craft-making, IC will organize the “Workshop of Jiangsu Sachet Fabric Art” and the “Workshop of Guangxi Tie-dyeing”, each in four sessions. Inheritors from the two regions are specially invited to introduce the sachet fabric-making and the tie-dyeing skills. The workshops will be held on 8 and 9 February, from 10:30am to 12:30pm and from 3pm to 5pm, at No.55-57, Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (Green Townhouses), conducted in Mandarin. Each session of the workshops is limited to 20 participants. Admission is free. Interested parties can register online from today to 6 February through IC’s “Activity Registration System” at www.icm.gov.mo/eform/event, subject to availability. Allotment is on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, in order to allow the public to have a better understanding of the weaving, dyeing and embroidery skills, inheritors from the two regions will present demonstrations during the exhibition period from 22 to 26 January, from 10am to 12pm and from 3pm to 5pm.

“The World at Their Fingertips – Exhibition of Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery Skill Art of Jiangsu Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region” is open from 22 January to 16 February at the Chun Chou Tong Pavilion of Lou Lim Ioc Garden. Admission is free. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is open daily from 9am to 7pm, including on public holidays.
