“Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts” opens showcasing the latest development of local contemporary arts

Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the “Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2024 – Western Media Category” was inaugurated today (29 November) at the Tap Seac Gallery. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Acting President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Cheang Kai Ming; the Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Bai Bing; the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Macao Polytechnic University, Lai Mei Kei; the President of the Macau Artist Society, Lok Hei; and the President of the Macau Art Master Association, Lai Ieng.

An award ceremony was held during the opening ceremony, where the officiating guests presented certificates to ten artists who won the “Outstanding Artworks Award”. The works and their respective authors and award-winners (in order of the character strokes of the Chinese names) are as follows: If they really exist by Lei Hio Lam; A class in July by Cheong Hang Fong; Floating City – Neon City by Leong Wai Lap; A kite without wind by Leong Kit Man; Macao – Dragon soaring in the prosperous age by Mak Kuong Weng; 0 by Wong Kin Tong; Life finds a way by Wong Mei Teng; One-Man Macao Poetry No.2 by Lao I Wo; Receiving/Acceptance Series – ‘Knowledge #1’ and ‘Consumption’ by Cheong Cheng Wa; and Detached from the old haunt by Filipe Miguel das Dores. The Acting President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Cheang Kai Meng, referred in his speech that the “Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts” not only provides a platform for artists to showcase their talents and express their insights on arts and society through their works, but also promotes the popularisation of the arts and cultivates the public’s artistic literacy and aesthetics.

In this year’s exhibition, a total of 178 pieces/sets of artworks from 181 artistic practitioners were received, covering a wide variety of Western media, including sketch, watercolour, oil painting, print, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, mixed media and installation art, which were presented in two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multimedia formats. This exhibition features 45 pieces/sets of award-winning and selected works that cover a variety of themes, showcasing the artistic skills and creativity of the local artists.

The “Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts – Western Media Category” is held from today until 29 December, at the Tap Seac Gallery. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 7pm, including on public holidays. Admission is free. During the exhibition period, guided tours will be available in Cantonese at 3pm and Mandarin at 4:15pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, as well as on 23, 26 and 27 December.
