Beethoven’s Triple Concerto was written in around 1803 and 1804 for piano, violin and cello. By 1803, when Beethoven began the Triple Concerto, he had already completed several piano trios, sonatas for violin and piano, and sonatas for cello and piano, and thus had learned to balance the different timbres of the three solo instruments. This familiarity allowed him to fully exploit the various instruments’ distinct personalities in the extensive concertino sections.
