The Orchestre Philarmonique du Luxembourg was founded in 1933 and has since played a significant role in the musical life of the Grand-Duchy, the city of Luxembourg itself and other cities, as well as in the Echternacht and Wiltz festivals, making it the most representative vignette of Luxembourg’s musical life. Its four musical directors in almost 70 years of existence, Henri Pensis, Louis de Froment, Leopold Hager and David Shallon, have given the orchestra a flattering international reputation. After September 2002, the outstanding British conductor Bramwell Tovey has presided over the destiny of the orchestra, and Emanuel Krivine is its privileged guest conductor. Besides famous works by Berlioz and Beethoven, the concert features Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng’s “Flute Moon”, a skilful synthesis of his deep affinity for Chinese culture and his exceptional skill in writing Western art music.
