Two Italian operas written in the romantic 19th
century are paired on a traditional double-bill. They sing tales of ill-fated
love triangles. The first of these is Cavalleria Rusticana, the keystone
of the gritty, realistic verismo style. A young Pietro Mascagni composed
this one-act opera to a simple but intense story by Giovanni Verga. Dangerous
jealousy forms the backdrop of Ruggero Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, as
well. The life of the unfaithful actress ends tragically on the comedia
dell'arte stage, while in Cavalleria, the lover Turiddu perishes in a
Sicilian-style duel of inflamed passions.

20-minute intermission
