Mahler:
Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand”
Gustav Mahler’s grand-scale 1906 composition is
known as the “Symphony of a Thousand” because of the huge number of performers
it requires. The first half of the work is based on an ancient Latin hymn of the
ninth century, and the extended latter half is a setting of the final cosmic
scene of Goethe’s drama “Faust.” The Macao Orchestra will collaborate with seven
distinguished vocalists, two international orchestras, three Chinese choruses
and a local youth chorus in this stunning concert during the 20th Macao
International Music Festival.
