Johannes Brahms A
German Requiem, op. 45
A
German Requiem is Brahms’ greatest and most ambitious vocal work, which
reflects the composer’s virtuosic grasp of both nineteenth-century vocal
techniques and the polyphonic vocal techniques of the previous three centuries.
Brahms’ choice of the nondenominational text distinguishes the work from the
five-part Roman Catholic requiem, making it one of the most frequently performed
vocal masterpieces in the history of music.
