Chamber music beats strong in the hearts of this Austrian ensemble. The silver and brass shimmer and the piano soars, making the frontiers of time and space vanish, as they have for the last three decades. In Macao, the Vienna Symphony Virtuosi court the lady chamber music once again with the poetry of Johann Strauss, Mozart and Hummel just before seducing her with the jazz of Cole Porter (“Another Op’in’, Another Show”), Claude Bolling, and others. But the giant leap between musical idioms is made effortlessly with a piece by Friedrich Gulda, the famous Viennese concert pianist known for his love of swing.
