The Santo Aleixo marionettes appear to have originated in the village in Portugal’s Alentejo Region which gave them their name. Like the large stringed puppets from southern Italy and northern Europe, they are manipulated from above, but are smaller – between 20 and 40 cm in height. The “dynasty” of these puppets dates from the middle of the 19th century. Property of the Évora Cultural Centre, they are manipulated by a “family” of professional actors which guarantees the authenticity of the performances and thus ensures the continuity of this traditional Alentejan art. In Macao they will perform Auto da Criação do Mundo (Story of How the World Was Created) and Auto do Nascimento do Menino (Story of the Birth of Jesus).
Duration: approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes, no interval
