Sunrise, published in 1936, is the second play written by the famous contemporary Chinese playwright Cao Yu. It describes the dark life of the Chinese people during the period from 1931 to 1935 under the reactionary rule of the Kuomintang. In this play, Cao Yu continues his thematic treatment of individuals' progressive moral degradation in the face of a hostile society. He recounts the stories of several Shanghai women, showing how their lives disintegrate in response to lack of affection and of acknowledgment from the society surrounding them, leading them down a tragic path from which they cannot escape. Widely acclaimed, it is regarded as one of the outstanding works of the new Chinese literature, which came into being after the May 4th Movement in 1919.
Performed in Cantonese, with surtitles in Portuguese
