H. Berlioz: Nuits d'été, op. 7
G. Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major
Zhang Liping is the first Chinese woman to have appeared at New York’s world-renowned Metropolitan Opera. The internationally acclaimed Chinese soprano, noted for her perfect singing artistry and incredible performing talent, presents two famous romantic classics under the baton of Lü Jia, Music Director of the Macao Orchestra.
Berlioz’s music was closely related to his romantic experiences. His vocal suite Nuits d'été,op. 7 exudes romantic and poetic ambience. This innovative orchestral song cycle served as a model of inspiration for the later, legendary composer Gustav Mahler.
Gustav Mahler– a composer whose works integrate both late 19th Century and modern music – continues to gain significance and popularity. His symphonies are all large-scale works, and the first four were strongly influenced by the collection of German folk poems The Youth's Magic Horn. The theme of the song “Heaven’s Life”(Das himmlische Leben) is sung by the soprano in the final movement, reflecting Mahler’s ideal vision that “the joy of heaven belongs to us”. There is little doubt that Mahler offers us impressive music!
