When American composer George Gershwin published his symphony Rhapsody in Blue in 1924, its unparalleled success elevated him overnight to the stature of world-class composer. Apart from composing classical music, he made substantial contributions to Broadway's theatrical performances and to popular music. Aspiring to install the once unpopular American jazz music in its rightful place alongside refined music, Gershwin, with his other classical work An American in Paris, took his craft to its zenith.
Having spent his Japanese childhood absorbing the sights and sounds of a family of professional jazz musicians – and having at the age of six already had his precocious jazz performance talent recognised – pianist Makoto Ozone can be said to have an innate grasp of the genre’s musical essence. At the same time, he possesses a professional pianist's profound understanding and solid mastery of classical music, the ardour and artistry of which he has incorporated into jazz music. When it comes to performing Gershwin's jazz piano works, there could be no better choice of musician than Makoto Ozone – a "match made in heaven".
