There is a by-lane in Macao linking to Rua dos Ervanários called Beco da Rosa (Rose Alley). The alley was home to a thriving neighbourhood society, and there is a stone plaque installed there which records the historical facts of the area. Though today only ruins remain, the place will forever represent prosperity, a life goal always present in the minds of Macao residents.
Stories of the Rose Alley describes the life of joys and sorrows lived by the people of Rose Alley from the 1920s to the 1990s. Its various characters embody the tolerance, kindness and open-mindedness of the typical residents of Macao. In a simple, realistic way the Hiu Koc Drama Association, Macau's only professional theatre company, presents a play evoking nostalgia among the locals as the present age accelerates towards internationalisation.
