PROGRAMME
N. Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35
P. I. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
The symphonic masterworks of Russian classical music are frequently concerned with the formation of a national, cultural, and/or ethnic identity. For Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, however, symphonic music was not merely a novel means of artistic and nationalist expression. His orchestral Suite Scheherazade , based on the legendary Persian queen and storyteller, combines his gift for brilliant orchestration with a heightened interest in Eastern culture. The seductive violin melody representing Scheherazade appears in every movement, and provides musical and contextual unity to the entire composition. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed his Fourth Symphony on the heels of his divorce from Antonina Milyukova. The composer’s anguish and torment are magnificently expressed through the famous “fate motif,” which musically articulates his personal philosophical thoughts and most intimate sentiments. Sparkling with orchestral virtuosity and instrumental luxuriance, both works are treasured staples of an extended and magnificent Russian musical heritage. In Tales from Russia, we are delighted to have this glorious repertory come to life in the hands of Maestro Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
