The 28th MIMF proudly presents the Coro Gulbenkian, a legendary Portuguese vocal ensemble renowned for its technical brilliance, vast repertory, and sensitive interpretations! The choir takes its name from Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian businessman and philanthropist, who bequeathed the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Founded in 1964 and headquartered in Lisbon, the foundation oversaw not only the construction of a museum and performance complex, but also founded the Gulbenkian Choir. Numbering 100 choristers, who can be arranged into smaller vocal ensembles depending on the performed repertory, the Coro Gulbenkian has toured extensively throughout the world, either a cappella or with various orchestras, and recorded an enormous discography ranging from Renaissance polyphony to works by contemporary Portuguese composers, including compositions inspired by Portugal’s cultural and colonial influences. Since 1969, the highly esteemed and internationally lauded musician Michel Corboz has been the Principal Conductor of the choir. Make sure you catch their artistic and interpretive mastery in Sacred Music from High Baroque to French Romanticisma programme that juxtaposes luminous motets by J. S. Bach with devotional works by his Portuguese contemporary Francisco António de Almeida and the stirring musical venerations of Gabriel Fauré.
